[Official American poster for Frozen. The film’s title is emblazoned in the upper-centre in icy blue letters. Beneath, we see the five main characters, Hans, Anna, Olaf, Elsa, and Kristoff, buried in snow with only their heads visible. Olaf holds his head up high using his two stick arms.]
Frozen is a 2013 animated Walt Disney film, loosely inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale The Snow Queen. It is the 53rd animated feature the studio has produced, and is widely considered to be one of the best of Disney’s recent efforts. In March this year, Frozen became the highest-grossing animated film of all time.
The story of Frozen revolves around the relationship between two sisters, Anna and Elsa, and the competing forces of fear and love within a traditional coming-of-age narrative. For the fandom, these complex themes and characters provide a rich foundation for meta discussion and fanfiction, with Elsa in particular emerging as a fan favourite, embodying themes of repression, sacrifice, and self-discovery. Unsurprisingly, fanart enjoys similar popularity, taking inspiration from the film’s striking visual style, blending CGI and traditional animation in order to create the snowy Scandinavian landscape of Arendelle.
Join us in celebrating the Frozen fandom this month by posting your fanworks at AO3, and sharing your experience of the fandom on its Fanlore page! Don’t forget you can also share your works and recs with other fans in our April Showers collection.
(In honor of our April Showers festivities, we’re highlighting one fandom for each day in April. Help us celebrate by keeping an eye on our social media sites: AO3 Twitter, AO3 Tumblr, and Fanlore Twitter.)

"provide a rich foundation for meta discussion" or as others would call it - obsessing over Hans in an extremist fashion
